Abstract

The results obtained using different methods for student evaluation in Pharmacology during the 1986-89 period are presented. A significant positive correlation is found between the results of different evaluative techniques, as well as between the scores obtained with either objective test or essay type examinations. Both the difficulty and the discrimination index for most of the multiple-choice questions were as proposed by the WHO Educational Handbook for Health Personnel. Methods of continnous evaluation applied to repeatedly failed students give better results than the traditional methods consisting of formative partial exams and a final examination comprising the whole suject. Finally, in order to obtain a better appraisal of the student's progress, the use of several evaluative techniques simultaneously is recommended.
