In this verse of Berceo "Smirna" has nothing to do with the Greek city in Anatolia. Myrrh is personified in the magical papyri, where it is invoked because of its great power in matters of love. According to Christian writers, it symbolizes the bitterness of repentance, the mortification of the flesh and death.
