Abstract

Throughout its life, the castle of Berlanga de Duero has performed many and various tasks. All of them having the same aim: to protect the people or the properties which were significant for them. In the middle of the 16th century, we can find the evidence that archives were being housed at Berlanga Castle. It was the familiy archive of Tovar Velasco ancestry, which was sheltered behind the walls of the fortress over two centuries. After part of the documents were stolen in 1678, the archive was finally moved to Pedraza village. As a result Berlanga castle lost its final and only purpose.
