This paper deals with cv. Mencia, grafted onto 110R, trellis trained, with 3 different vine spacings (1.0, 1.3 and 1.6 m) in the row and a distance between rows of 3.0 m, during 2009–2012, in a vineyard planted in 2002, Cacabelos (Leon), belonging to D.O. Bierzo. The increase of distance between vines to 1.6 m increased slightly the grape production, due to the number of clusters per linear meter. The pruning wood weight was significantly reduced due to distance increase, with an average reduction of 20% in treatment 1.6 with respect to treatment 1.0, due to the decrease of shoot weight. The Ravaz index showed a clear increase with the distance, due to the reduction of pruning weight. The increment of distance showed a tendency to reduce the concentration of sugars, malic acid and K, without any definitive modification of pH and titratable acidity, whereas the K decreased progressively with the increment of distance and the IPT showed a little increase due to change from 1.0 m to 1.3 or 1.6 m.
