¿A qué español traducimos? Delimitación del concepto «español estándar» aplicado a la traducción

It is not easy to define standard because it is a polysemic word (Ramiro Valderrama 2012:6). We aim at defining what is 'standard Spanish' and its characteristics for translation purposes. Standard Spanish regarded as a supralectal cross-variety (not as a more prestigious dialect or sociolect) can be an invaluable cross-cultural communication tool in international settings. This paper presents a method for subtitling the Argentinian film El hijo de la novia (Campanella 2001). A heavily marked scene is analysed and intralingually translated by using interlectal translation whenever is possible. Supralectal translation is only considered when there is no better alternative. The results show that interlectal translation is only possible in 3 out of 10 cases. This is due to the lack of interlectal equivalents in the target variety (Castilian Spanish).
