Abstract
Under the rule of Ferdinand III and Alphonse X in the thirteenth century and influenced by the reception of Roman Law in the emerging Castilian towns and universities, a policy aiming at monarchical centralization was started, which led to the transformation of the relationships between the Crown and the other powers, such as the towns and the nobility. This process, which was consolidated after the accession of the Trastámara dynasty in 1369, involved the transition from the old to the new nobility –according to Moxó- and the consolidation of the full territorial manor. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how the granting of territorial powers from the monarchs to the nobles is presented in two particular types of documents, the records of manorial grants and takeovers, by examining the textual and symbolic language of the documents related to the case of María de Acuña, the seventh Countess of Buendía, who inherited the title in 1592 after the death of her heirless brother.
