Abstract

This article is the result of a larger study on "Active aging in Castilla y Leon" which addresses the importance of participatory aging as an essential element of civil society and as a key element in building a society for all ages, taking into account geographical differences of aging (aging ecology) and the differences from the perspective of gender. The central idea that we propose for active aging is moving towards an "active mental life (physical and mental conditions rewarding and positive) to help increase personal autonomy, to take responsibility and social initiatives and delay or eliminate dependency situations. It also assumes that the opportunities from social services to older people pose to remain an active part in their social environment as actors and not as consumers of projects, could help give a different meaning to the situation of dependency.
