Abstract

The semantic principle of unaccusative is universal, but not the syntactic behavior of unaccusative predicates which exhibit, different structural dispositions that vary from one language to another. This parametric diversity constitutes the nucleus of this study, since in our teaching context the following idiomatic triad converges: L1-Mandarin Chinese, L2-English and L3-Spanish. In the latter, certain unaccusative verbs are prone to the Verb-Subject order, for its part, English has more rigid structural requirements that prevent the postponement of the subject in those cases in which Spanish does allow it. This different ordering behavior of some unaccusatives in these two languages is essential to address in our ELE classes for non-speakers, since in this scenario the students use not the template of their Ll, but that of their L2, which, as we have just mentioned, presents a more restricted degree of flexibility and this can cause a manifest negative transfer in their productions at a structural level.
