Resumen

Philosopher and writer José Ortega y Gasset is considered one of the most influential figures in Spanish cultural life during the first half of the twentieth century. Born in Madrid on 9 May 1883, he attended the Jesuit school in Málaga’s Miraflores del Palo, the city where he also earned his bachillerato diploma in 1897. In 1898, Ortega began his university studies in law and philosophy at the University of Deusto. From there, he would transfer to the Universidad Central (now Complutense) of Madrid, where he earned his degree from the School of Philosophy and Letters in 1902. Two years later, he received his doctorate from the same institution for his work entitled “Los terrores del año mil. Crítica de una leyenda” (“The Terrors of the Year One Thousand: Critique of a legend”). It is historical realism that has made it clear to me that the unity of Europe as society is not an ‘ideal’ but a very ancient daily fact, and having seen this fact one cannot but confront the probability of a general European state. “Unity and Diversity of Europe” in Toward a Philosophy of History, 1941 J. Ortegay Gasset Translation by Eleanor Clark.
