Abstract

The creation of experimental reference collections has been the key in the development of use-wear analysis in the last decades. Wear reproductions on lithic materials are the reference in the search of these wears on the archaeological assemblage. However, there are some questions in relation to these collections. First, we must think about the necessity of create a new experimental program for studying each lithic record. This is necessary because of the different reactions of raw materials even though they could be similar. Second, we will consider about our ability to reproduce postdepositional alterations on lithic surfaces, especially in ancient collections (more than 1 m.a.). Finally, we discuss our ability to measure (and reproduce) the variables which inferred in the development of use-wear archaeological collection. The purpose of this paper is to explore about the advances and the limits in experimental collections, an essential step in order to comprehend functional studies in archaeological.
