Abstract

The drawing of San Bartolomé de Jávea is one of the few representations of a complete architectural plan made in 16th-century Valencia that has survived until today. The design was surely used as a sample, its aim was to present the project to the patrons before to its actual construction. This article analyses the professional career of the architect who made the design, the Basque master Domingo de Urteaga. Afterwards, it analyses the drawing, the study of which allows us to better understand the process of creating the building. Finally, the function and nature of this type of designs are analysed. The discovery of an unpublished document has made it possible to provide new information on the architect’s family, and it sheds light on some of the promoters who financed the construction of the church.
