Abstract
In this article, we try to analyse the management of communal areas in Els Ports, El Maestrat and L’Alcalatén region, in the north of the Kingdom of Valencia. From 14th Century, councils of the region took over the management of the communal lands and developed a series of rules aimed at regulating the use. These laws were contained in the llibre d’establiments and were result of consensus achieved between the different powers existing in the local area. Our aim is to study these sources with the purpose of knowing how towns and rural communities were administering communal areas, with a system intended to keep the communal rights above private interests
