Abstract
This work focuses on the frontier character of the Salamacan area and the role of the Iberian Raya in its social configuration during the Middle Ages. After some conceptual considerations, we broach the construction process of the border between the Kingdom of Leon and the new Kingdom of Portugal in the 12 th century. In addition, some of its implications at different levels are described, specially regarding to the Late Middle Ages. We use varied works and, in a more specific way, some unpublished archival documents are analysed as well. In conclusion,we emphasise the border porosity in the daily relationships between both frontier communities.
