Resumen

Recent archaeological studies carried out at the fortified sites of Castelinho, Crestelos, Fonte do Milho and Castelo dos Mouros (northeastern Portugal), two of them, Alto da fonte do Milho and Castelo dos Mouros, now completed under the framework of mitigation measures in the balance sheets related to the construction of a new hydroelectric dam in the north of Portugal (Crestelos & Castelinho), have provided us with a great amount of data, which is discussed in this paper. Although geographical and cultural differences should be taken into account, it is obvious that the four archaeological sites are related to each other in several ways, what justifies a collaborative presentation. One of these shared characteristics is their development over time: built in the Iron Age, all of them show more or less permanent evidence of the presence and effect of the Roman conquest of the north western Iberian Peninsula. To show this development, this contribution focuses on the evolution and peculiarities of the defensive systems of the mentioned archaeological sites, four of the most emblematic fortified sites from the second peninsular Iron Age.
