Resum

One of the technologies that achieves high efficiency and energy savings in HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systemsof buildings is called heat pump. This is an environmentally friendly technology because of the use of renewable energies for its operation.Heat pumps appear in the European Directives on the use of Renewable Energy (RES), Energy Performance of Buildings (EPBD) andEnergy related products (ErP). In addition, the energy used by heat pumps that comes from air, water and earth is recognized as arenewable energy sources in the RES Directive. Technology, efficiency and different kinds of heat pumps applied in buildings for heatingand cooling will be described in this chapter. Finally, a practical example of a geothermal heat pump real project for a dwelling will beshown.
