Abstract

The article analyses through in-depth interviews, the role that rural areas play in the migratory trajectories and projects of foreign-born immigrants settled in three rural areas of Castilla y León (Spain). The paper focuses also in their perception of the rural environment and their future plans in relation to rural residence, taking into account the consequences of the 2008 economic crisis. The findings suggest that rural areas are not always a mere way station to urban environments. The desire to stay in the countryside is linked to the opportunity to develop trajectories of progress, both in work and life.
