Abstract

The relationships between the economy and nature have typically been relegated to mere externalities. However, Ecological Economics have shown that both dimensions are fundamentally integrated, with the biophysical environment being a limiting factor in the production process. Ecological Macroeconomics and Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) have emerged in the last decade as a fundamental tool for analysing the complex relationships between the economy, the environment, and natural resources. However, these models have been criticized for focusing on the impacts of the economy on the environment without a complete integration in which the environment effectively limits the economy. In this article we describe the MEDEAS model, in which this limitation is covered through an energy-economy feedback mechanism whereby the availability of sufficient energy resources limits the productive capacity of the economy. We illustrate the usefulness of this approach through two case studies: the decarbonisation of global transport and the energy transition in the European Union. The results show the need to undertake deep socioeconomic changes in order to decarbonise the economy. Post-growth scenarios are particularly effective in achieving this objective.
