Abstract

Among the various works by the South African born writer Bessie Head (1937-1986), who became a citizen of Botswana later in life, only two of them have been able to overcome all the difficulties and get translated into Spanish, La coleccionista de tesoros (2003) and Nubes de lluvia (2017). Her tragic life as a mixed-race woman in hostile environments to her hybrid nature determined her oeuvre and endowed it with a strong autobiographical impulse. The publication of a collected volume entitled A Woman Alone. Autobiographical Writings in Heinemann’s mythical African Writers Series (AWS) in 1990 was not a surprise. This work has never been translated into Spanish or into any other language. Consequently, this article seeks to address the following objectives: 1) to approach Bessie Head’s figure focusing in what Spanish-language readers do not have access to, taking advantage of some key concepts of Carl Jung’s Analytical Psychology; 2) to comment on a very consolidated translation policy that hinders the Spanish reception of postcolonial writers such as Bessie Head; 3) to apply the theories in the volume entitled Borrowed Tongues. Life Writing, Migration, and Translation (2012) by E. C. Karpinski to a possible translation project of Bessie Head’s autobiographical writings into Spanish; and 4) understand Bessie Head better as feminist woman and writer from a transnational perspective.
