Spanish medieval historiography has experienced a very significant change in the last decades and its former backwardness is now overcome. In recent years, Spanish medievalism has been definitively integrated into the European Middle Ages. It is not feasible to summarize all the issues that are currently discussed, but this article attempts to point out some of the major debates, topics, and features that have characterized medieval Spanish historiography in the last thirty to forty years. The tendency to become regional specialists on behalf of scholars and the controversy surrounding the term ‘Spain’ will be some of the main aspects analysed throughout these pages.
