Resumo

The health of induction welded thermoplastic joints was assessed by monitoring the electromagnetic response to a time-varying magnetic field through a local measurement of the attenuated and reflected field. To this end, a numerical model was developed to study how the interface of the joint affects the electromagnetic response in the presence and absence of. Using a single loop coil geometry, the frequency range in which the highest damage detection sensitivity occurs for different sizes of a pre-set delamination in the weld zone has been identified. The results obtained constitute the starting point for future research activities aimed at developing a sensitive electromagnetic-based layer for monitoring the health of welds, capable of detecting and quantifying joint damage and assessing the residual fatigue life of thermoplastic composite materials
