Abstract

Cognitive Anthropology conceives culture as a mental content. From such perspective and taking into account the studied tendency towards idealization in the Latin American historic discourse, it is possible to analyze the changes in such account as cultural response. The Mexican city of Guanajuato, listed as World Heritage by UNESCO, had a complex history already studied socially and from an urban point of view. In this work, new historic narratives created upon tourist pressure were analyzed. Therefore, the aim of this work was to study the sociocultural impact of the tourist pressure and the creation of an alternate history, distant from actual historic facts. All this, from an anthropological point of view where written sources were analyzed. Material culture of the city was also surveyed, which adds an urban view to the research. The case shows that the new discourse is at least partially linked to tourist pressure through a cognitive process of idealization.
