Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of justice and trust on knowledge sharing among members of a research team from a Spanish university. A qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews (n=19) has been conducted to understand the effect of trust and justice on knowledge sharing and participation within a research group from a Spanish public university. Five categories were identified: (1) Trust in team members, (2) Trust in management, (3) Informational justice, (4) Procedural justice, and (5) Intention. This study provides a systematic investigation of the factors influencing knowledge sharing among academics. The results suggest that when members trust the management and team members, and are informed about issues of their interest, decisions, and how they were made, an environment is created that promotes knowledge exchange. Universities can enhance faculty participation in research groups by promoting actions that foster trust among their members, as well as with the principal investigators leading them, and by fostering both management and information sharing processes that emphasize transparency.
