Sustainable development goals

Abstract

The complex of the Sociedad Iberica del Nitrogeno (1950-1997) was established during the 1960s and 1970s as one of the main economic engines of Asturias. In terms of facilities and technology, its modernity as well as the fact that it is based on a global project, has led to its recognition as a model of innovation. However, after its closure, it has turned into a forgotten place with the passage of time. This article aims to analyze and interpret the design and construction processes of this project from the current perspective and means, as an example of a modern architectural-industrial complex designed entirely with functional issues in mind. Through the critical interpretation of its original composition and the elaboration of new graphic documentation, it contributes to the recognition of the factors of a specific and common aesthetic in the work of engineer Carlos Fernández Casado, while identifying the singularities that characterize this case. Bearing in mind the aforementioned, the translation/interpretation is intended of a currently illegible example as a result of decades of abandonment and dismantling while also generating arguments in favor of its enhancement as.a landmark of landscape, heritage and identity.
