Abstract
This paper presents an ongoing research project since 2007 designed to study the exploitation of salt at the Lagoons of Villafáfila, in Zamora, during prehistoric times. Fieldwaking surveys have documented a high density of archaeological sites by the waterbodies. Excavations at Molino Sanchón II and Santioste have revealed the production sequence by brine boiling during the transition from the Chalcolithic to the Bronze Age. Some evidence suggests that this activity was increasingly controlled by incipient elites.
