Abstract

Book XI of the Palatine Anthology comprises satirical and symposiastic epigrams, for which the closing epigram does not fit in: a 6 - verse composition apparently praising the tyrant Peisistratus and his contribution to the collecting and editing of the Homeric poems. The aim of this article is to analyse the epigram in detail, focusing on its dating, sources and interpretation, in order to establish whether or not an ironical reading, as suggested by modern critics propose, is justifiable.
