Abstract

Patronage was one of the main tools with which medieval queens participated in politics. The founding and endowment of monasteries made it possible to establish networks of influence and, in addition, to legitimize their lineage through religious iconography. María de Molina took care of two mendicant monasteries in Valladolid: San Pablo and San Francisco, founded by her predecessor; as well as a monastery of her own initiative, Santa María la Real de las Huelgas de Valladolid. The three will be subject to her ownership and devotion throughout different critical moments of her life, allowing her to create different discourses to cement her position in power.
