Abstract

Improvement of the fire resistance of recycled ABS material when environmentally friendly additives are added, such as aluminium trihydroxide (THA), magnesium hydroxide (HDM), sepiolite (SEP) and PAVAL (which is a mixture of metal oxides and hydroxides obtained during the purification of aluminium), has been investigated. The use of these additives has allowed evaluation of the main anti-fire mechanisms in the composite materials: protective coating and water release. The material properties were thoroughly evaluated and, as expected, the addition of flame retardants additives modified the mechanical properties by increasing the Young's modulus and producing a loss in the elongation and Charpy values, while the tensile strength showed a different behaviour depending on the additive. The fire tests showed that combinations containing SEP exceeded the HB classification (no dripping and low burning rate). Then, this research clearly shows that SEP+HDM+rABS composites can be a great alternative to eliminate the use of halogenated flame retardants
