This paper focuses on Seamus Heaney's latest volume of poetry: The Spirit Level (1996) viewed in the light of three relevant poems in the book. The poems, the three of them excellent evidence of Heaney's poetic knowhow, are: "Keeping Going", "The Flight Path" and the splendid sequence Mycenae Lookout, and, their formal and notional consideration allows me to refer to the book in paradoxical terms, namely, as a new and original "element of continuity" (i.e. an apt, flexible and balanced combination of the heaneyian features "sense of place", aesthetic commitment, and transcendence) within the author's poetic development.
