Resum

The main objective of this article is to study the right that non-Spanish speaking people have to be assisted by a qualified interpreter in court proceedings in the Spanish province of Cuenca. In other words, it is our aim to find out whether the right to a fair trial is being observed for non-Spanish speakers. To this end, a questionnaire has been administered among state-appointed lawyers practicing in the province of Cuenca, who have been asked whether they know the role and qualifications of interpreters and to what extent people providing interpreting services in this area are really qualified for the job. This survey was also designed so as to know whether lawyers are aware of the requirements that must be met by interpreters and the intricacies of their activity, as all these factors may affect the observance of the right of a non-Spanish speaking person to have a fair trial.
