My research is developed in the fields of Mathematical Statistics and Probability, generally linked to the proposal of new statistical methods with applicability vocation and to the contribution of the mathematical foundations necessary for a correct design and calibration of such statistical methods. From the point of view of applications, my career has covered resampling methods, goodness-of-fit techniques, validation of models with contamination or structured data aggregation problems, including cluster analysis. Several of these lines incorporate trimming methods, originating in the context of statistical robustness, to more classical frameworks. Model validation with contamination brings new perspectives to the classical discussion between statistical significance and practical significance. The problem of structured data aggregation is of great importance in the current era of big data. As for the probabilistic aspect, my work has been developed in the environment of empirical processes, combining methodologies coming from probability in Banach spaces with those linked to strong approximations. Another source of probabilistic inspiration is related to optimal transport problems. Concepts such as the barycenter in Wasserstein space are very useful as a tool in the aggregation of structured data and are receiving great attention at the moment. As an example of the interest in the topic, we can cite the conference “New Bridges between Mathematics and Data Science”, held in Valladolid (November 8-11, 2021), promoted by the Strategic Mathematics Network, which brought together the leading researchers in Data Science in Spain and a good international representation. In this congress I was a member of the scientific committee and coordinator of the local committee. The results obtained in the previous topics have been published in the main journals of the field, including Annals of Probability, Annals of Statistics, JASA, PTRF or Statistical Science. One of these publications was awarded in the 2023 edition as the best methodological contribution in Statistics in the SEIO/Fundación BBVA awards. In the last ten years I have collaborated with researchers from the Artificial Intelligence Institute ANITI, Toulouse and I have published with them papers in the main conferences of the aŕea of “Computer Science”, including ICML or CVPR. I have supervised six doctoral theses along the above lines. All have produced publications in JCR indexed journals, including papers in JASA, Bernoulli or CSDA. I am currently directing three others (one in its final phase, with a PhD student with a FPU predoctoral contract; the other two are in their first year and one of them corresponds to an industrial PhD in collaboration with the technology company CIDAUT) . I have been secretary (2015-2023) and director (2023-2025) of the University Institute for Research in Mathematics of the University of Valladolid (IMUVA). I am also a member of the management team of the Center for Artificial Intelligence of the UVa (UvaIA). Since February 2025 I am the director of the Department of Statistics and Operations Research at UVa. Since 2022 I am a member of the Executive Council of the Spanish Society of Statistics and Operations Research (SEIO). In addition, I am associate editor of the journal of this society (TEST, indexed in JCR) and I have been PI of several National Plan projects: PID2021-128314NB-I00, MTM2017-86061-C2-1-P and MTM2014-56235-C2-1-P. Finally, I should point out that I have been a member of the Mathematics evaluation panel of the State Research Agency and of several international scientific agencies.
