Doctor by the Universidad de León with the thesis Detección, identificación y cuantificación de organismos modificados genéticamente (OMG) en alimentos mediante PCR a tiempo real 2003. Supervised by Dr. Salomé Prat, Dr. Maria Pla de Solà-Morales, Dr. Carlos Alonso Calleja.

Dr Marta Hernández Pérez, PhD and DVM, has worked for 24 years in research and teaching in public institutions (CSIC, Agricultural Technology Institute, University of Burgos and University of Valladolid). Since 2023, she has been Professor of Microbiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Valladolid, where she is coordinator of the Microbiology Area and the Biomedicine and Advanced Therapies degree programme. She has spent time at international centres such as the Francis Crick Institute, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Bristol, the UK Food and Environment Research Agency in York, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Utrecht (Netherlands) and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Warwick. She has supervised seven doctoral theses and numerous bachelor's and master's theses, and has published over 200 scientific articles with an H-index of 51. Her lines of research include respiratory virus sequencing, microbiota, antimicrobial resistance and food pathogens. She is a member of the National Influenza Centre in Valladolid and a corresponding member of the Academy of Veterinary Sciences of Castile and León and the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Valladolid.
