Abstract

The purpose of this research is to design a leadership training model focused on the student to develop school management practices that promote teacher professional development and student learning. The mediating variables of the teachers' performance and their relationship with the high educational results obtained by the urban primary schools of the Araucanía Region, Chile, are investigated. From the methodological perspective, three empirical studies are developed, the first from a quantitative approach uses data bases of the System of Measurement of the Quality of Education (SIMCE, by its acronym in Spanish) and questionnaires to collect information on the mediating variables of teacher performance. The second is a qualitative approach case study that delves into the characteristics and practices of the school management and leadership team. The third study is part of participatory research and consists in the design of a leadership training model that is constructed in a dialogical manner that considers the results of the first two empirical studies as a resource. It is concluded that management teams can focus their leadership on student learning through their responsible influence on mediating variables, defined as working conditions, teacher motivation and teaching skills that affect teacher performance. This pedagogical conviction should guide educational policies and training programs to reinforce educational leadership in the school
