Resumen

The 40th anniversary of university journalism programs in Spain, coinciding with the mandatory implementation of the Bologna Process, represents a turning point in the curriculum and an ideal time to analyze the educational approach of the new Grado degree that will shape the profile of future Spanish journalists. In this context of opportunity, this research proposes a methodology for benchmarking the Licenciatura degree and the new Grado degree in journalism in Spanish universities. The main contribution of the analysis is that, for the first time, there is a comparison of the curriculum of all 35 university colleges that currently offer both the Licenciatura degree and the Grado degree in journalism in Spain. The study is based on a quantitative methodology using the content analysis technique that includes specific variables grouped in four lines of comparative analysis: theme, subject matter, type of class and continuity. By cross referencing variables, data are obtained which show various aspects of official educational plans: the predominance of specific areas of journalism and communication or general training, the practical or theoretical emphasis, the distinction between compulsory subjects, core and basic training; and the elimination of subjects, or the addition of new ones related to new technologies.
