Abstract

The aim of this work is to study the active control of slender civil structures (pedestrian footbridges), using a laboratory equipment and a low cost microcontroller (Arduino), for teaching and research purposes. It shows, in a simple way, the steps to put in operation a feedback control system. This controller is intended to remove o mitigate, as much as possible, the vibrations of the structure caused by the daily use of users (walking, running, skating) or environmental loads like wind. A simple model of the experimental structure is obtained attending to main mode of vibration. This work targets students and young researchers, for this reason only P, PI and PID controllers are used, but it is open to work with other types of controllers like optimal control, fuzzy control.
