From 1939 through the present, a conflict has ensued regarding the configuraron of musical identity. This conflict has involved both contemporary. and traditional musics; apparently, traditional music has become the only * model of «music». I will analyse the processes which opérate in literature and visual arts systems -accepted inside the cultural canon- from a polysystemic viewpoint. This analysis will serve as a cóntrasting point of reference with respect to the situation of the musical system. The first part finishes with a brief consideration of the discursive developments of the period, useful for the elaboration of the hermeneutic hypothesis.Then, I will suggest two consecutive models of cultural legitimisation which permit explanation of why traditional music has assumed the representation of «music» in this selected cultural context.
