Abstract
In this article I tests on the etymology of the medieval adverb mientre 'while', different from DUM INTERlM, the most repeated hypothesis, which has been not proved with documentary evidences. After checking a great number of dictionaries, monographs and grammars that have dealt with this word, it was necessary to do a research work based on some corpus of Latin and Romance texts in order to find more suitable variants to defend the existence of another etymology.
