This article investigates the issue of starchitects and their role in urban transformation in Italy. In the Italian context, the early 2000s was characterized by rapid expansion of urban development projects drafted by international architectural firms, but today many are reportedly unfinished and only a few have been built effectively, sometimes at a higher cost than expected, with all the associated controversies. Through several case studies, we question the role of starchitects in Italian urban regeneration and whether their participation guarantees „successful‟ architectural and urban projects. Often the expectations of the public and private actors involved in urban development have been disregarded by the proposals of the starchitects and there is no doubt that the economic crisis is a key factor in the postponement or failure of many related urban operations.
