Abstract

In 1941 Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames won First Prize in the competition of modern furniture sponsored by the MoMA. Although their designs of plywood chairs and armchairs were highly acclaimed by specialized critics, the USA entering the World War II hampered the later development of the awarded prototypes and scale models. The Museum launched again a competition in 1947, now aiming to promote furniture suitable for the new home life at post-war time. The 1950 exhibition of both the awarded prototypes and others of exceptional quality had significant repercussion on the design of furniture in 1950s, thus contributing to the imagery of what we know as the American Way of Life.
