Resumen
The iconographic programme focuses on notions such as intercession, the Last Judgement and the censure of behaviour that hinders the path to Salvation. This redemptive message begins to take shape through images of Saint Peter, Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian. In the middle of the predella are the four destinations of the soul: Glory, Children’s Limbo, Hell and Purgatory. Two allegorical figures are positioned on both sides linked to the vices: a child holding an amphisbaena in his hands, and another two-headed infant doing the same with two birds. Dolphins are carved on the pilasters flanking the niche of the Prince of the Apostles. This mythical fish has a salvific significance and as a psychopompos animal alludes to the messianic role of Christ, a very appropriate symbolism in the context of the Last Days and the role of the fisherman from Galilee as mediator between God and humanity.
