Abstract

Cartography is fundamental in geography education because it helps us understand the world and explain reality. This study focuses on analysing maps in 5th and 6th grade primary school textbooks published under the LOMCE and current LOMLOE legislative frameworks. Using analytical categories and the ATLAS.ti software, the typology of maps, the information that they provide, and the type of activities are analysed. The results indicate a smaller presence of maps in LOMLOE textbooks, although with a more significant didactic role. The purpose of these maps is not merely aesthetic, but fundamentally informative and explicative, and the territorial scope is diverse. A trend towards the inclusion of activities with a higher level of complexity is detected. Finally, the value of Cartography for geography teaching is discussed.
