Doctor by the Universidad de Valladolid with the thesis Tiamulina y tilosina como tratamientos alternativos contra la loque americana 2007. Supervised by Dr. Juan José Jiménez Sevilla, Dr. María Teresa Martín Gómez.
My scientific career began in 2003 during my doctoral studies at the University of Valladolid. After obtaining my doctorate, I worked at the Institute of Industrial Fermentations/Food Science Research Institute of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) on a Juan de la Cierva contract (January 2008–October 2010) under the supervision of Professor Alejandro Cifuentes. During this period, I also undertook a short research stay (June 2009–January 2010) at the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory of the University of Helsinki (Finland) under the supervision of Professor Marja Liisa Riekkola. Subsequently, I obtained a position as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Valladolid (October 2010), and from May 2012 to May 2020, I worked as a Tenured Lecturer at the same university. During this last period, I spent two months (August 2012–October 2012) as a Visiting Professor at the Center for Taste Research and Education at the University of Minnesota (USA) in collaboration with Professor Devin Peterson. In addition, I was invited to the University of Chile in April 2016 by Professor Edwar Fuentes to supervise and discuss different aspects of a project concerning the impact of pesticides on bee products. I obtained a position as a Tenured Professor in May 2020, and since May 2024, I have been a Full Professor at the University of Valladolid. Throughout these years, I have worked with various analytical separation techniques, including HPLC, UHPLC, GC or GC×GC, CE, and SFC, all coupled with various detectors, especially MS and MS/MS. I have also contributed as an author/co-author to over 140 scientific publications (JCR), including more than 70 in the corresponding Q1 and/or as a corresponding author, with an H-index of 31 and over 3,000 citations, 100 conference presentations (14 oral/invited communications), 7 book chapters, 1 patent, and 20 research projects or contracts with various industries and government agencies totaling over €800,000. I have international collaborations with the University of Chile, the University of Reading (UK), the University of Chemistry and Technology (Prague), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), Florida International University (USA), the University of Helsinki (Finland), Lund University (Sweden), the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil), and the Clermont Auvergne Institut National Polytechnique (France). The relevance of the scientific findings is also justified by their contribution to expanding knowledge on relevant topics such as colony collapse disorder, food safety and quality (including the analysis of contaminants and bioactive compounds), and the development of new analytical strategies, especially those involving green/white analytical chemistry. Furthermore, I have collaborated with various public and private institutions through different contracts and projects, and have also carried out numerous outreach activities at institutes, scientific fairs/conferences, and in the media. Finally, I would like to mention that I have supervised five doctoral theses and am currently supervising three more. I have also supervised more than 30 Master's and Bachelor's theses. In addition, I am a member of the Editorial Board of two JCR-indexed publications: Food Analytical Method, Journal of Food Composition and Analysis, and Foods, Molecules, Separations and Results in Chemistry.
