Résumé
The purpose of this study is to explain the fundamental role of relational understanding ofmathematics from the approach of knowledge theory. It also proposes a hermeneutic conception ofmathematics considering that human language is a social and communicative reality. In addition, the impact of this posture on relational understanding is studied through discourse analysis in asample of 10 students on concepts related to greatest common divisor and least common multiple. Results suggest an improvement in relational understanding due to this interpretative process. It isconcluded that the negotiation of meaning, guided by teacher, generates mathematical knowledge.
