José M. Marbán has a degree in Mathematics from the University of Valladolid (UVa) and a doctorate from the same university, as well as a Diploma of University Expert in University Teaching and a Diploma of University Expert in the Development of Didactic Resources for the Teaching of Mathematics in Primary and Secondary Schools. He is currently Associate Professor of the University of Valladolid at the Faculty of Education and Social Work in the Department of Didactics of Experimental, Social and Mathematical Sciences of which he is Director since September 1, 2019. He has been the Dean of the University College of Education of Soria (2004-2010), Vice-chancellor for Teaching Duties at UVa (2010-2012) and Vice-chancellor for International Relationships and University Extension of the UVa (2012-2014). José M. Marbán defines himself as a vocational mathematics educator and after a short experience in the field of Applied Mathematics he devoted his professional life to the teaching and research in Mathematics Education, a labor that he has been developing since 2000. In particular, he has been in charge of many different subjects at degree, master and PhD levels, most of them concerning teacher training, accumulating thousands of teaching hours. Along this trajectory he has also been officially appointed supervisor of undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has recently obtained a first and a second prize in the teaching innovation award from the Social Council of the University of Valladolid (one as a team member and the other one as coordinator of the project) and already received the Equality award from the Soria City Council for an educational project to promote equity in the classroom by means of inclusive mathematics education of pre-service teachers. His main research works are framed in the field of Mathematics Education, especially in the topics concerning teachers’ professional development and the affective domain in mathematics, although he has also collaborated in different initiatives related to groups that are especially vulnerable on issues of disability, immigration and gender. He has been accredited for two six-year research periods (sexenios), the most recent awarded in 2020, and he is the author of several scientific and dissemination publications, with a growing scientific production that has been especially significant in recent years. He has supervised 7 doctoral theses (3 with international mention, 1 with an Extraordinary Doctoral Award) and has another 8 ongoing, some close to their defense. He has also act as pre-examiner or opponent of doctoral dissertation and as a member in doctoral dissertation committees or boards. All his doctoral students who have already defended their PhD thesis have achieved relevant positions related to the educational field as it is the case of Ana Maroto or Rafael Méndez, for example or have started a research career as it is the case of the two Zambian students. He has participated and participates in different regional, national and international research projects on educational innovation, didactics of mathematics and applied mathematics, mainly, at the time that he is IP of different contracts or agreements both with the educational administration and with companies related to mathematics education and technology. At present he is the coordinator of the research group Mathematics Education at Uva and one of the two editors of the journal Edma 0-6: Childhood Mathematics Education. He has been a member of the Spanish Society for Research in Mathematics Education (SEIEM) since 1999 and a member of the AUIP Research Network for the Specialized Knowledge of Mathematics Teachers - MTSK since 2020. Finally, his research has also been spread for specialized and non-specialized public through media (e.g. The Conversation), special events (e.g. Pint of Science) and workshops (e.g. Capaciénciate).
